Fossil 化石

Tow main types of fossils:

1.     Body fossil

Example: Dinosaur bones

2.     Trace fossil

Example: foot print

Who study fossils?

Scientists who study fossils are called palaeontologists.

How Do Fossils Form?

The most common ways are formed when a plant or animal dies in a watery environment and is buried in mud and silt.

Soft tissues quickly decompose leaving the hard bones or shells behind.

The sediment slowly hardens into rock and preserves the shapes of the organisms.

Today we are going to talk about fossils.

What Are Fossils?

Fossils are the preserved remains, or traces, of animals or plants that were once living.

There are two main types of fossils:

body fossils and trace fossils.

Body fossils formed from the remains of dead animals and plants.

The most common examples are dinosaur bones.

Trace fossils are signs of once-living organisms such as a footprint.

Why are fossils important?

Fossils give scientists evidence about organisms that previously lived on Earth.

We can use fossils to determine how organisms alive today evolved.

Who study fossils?

Scientists who study fossils are called palaeontologists.

Palaeontologists compare fossils to find clues about early organisms and how they lived.
